Who Should Be the Next Spurs Head Coach?

--

Spotlight on court

As I’ve written about extensively, Gregg Popovich is no longer fit to be the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs.

So the next step is for the Holt Cat Family, Sixth Street Partners, Michael Dell, James R. Leininger, and maybe even David Robinson to fire Pop.

Or Pop can resign. Decide he wants to spend time with the family or travel the world to taste wine. Whatever.

But after that, who do the Spurs hire as Pop’s replacement?

Pop has been running the show in San Antonio since the 90s. He’d normally be the one to make such a grand basketball decision.

Holt Cat, Sixth Street, and Michael Dell are presumably the hands off type of owners (judging by history, not knowledge) so they might not know whom to hire or even how to go about the hiring process.

Then we have a $750,000 consultant come in to help (make) the decision. Maybe, I’m completely guessing here. I have no idea how these things go down.

Put the point is, they’d be left trying to figure out who to hire.

Some first thoughts during a brainstorming session might be:

  • Tim Duncan
  • Manu Ginóbili
  • Becky Hammon
  • Avery Johnson

Here is how I would swat away each during my imaginary consulting sessions with Spurs ownership:

Tim Duncan: Does Tim even want to coach? I think Tim is more than capable, save for the fact that I don’t think he wants to coach everyday for a long time.

Manu Ginóbili: A) same question as Tim. B) I like Manu, put him in the maybe pile.

Becky Hammon: Isn’t she currently coaching the Aces? Also, Becky never seemed particularly enthused when she was an assistant under Pop (she had the miserable look version of those Southwest Airlines, “Wanna Get Away” commercials). I need someone who wants to be glued to the coaching seat, not someone who needs a break after the game.

Avery Johnson: He’s too much of a loudmouth. He’s too grading and I think his unrelenting personality would take its toll on any organization, but especially the players of this generation.

So who’s my genius idea?

The Ninja, Sean Elliott

Here’s the case:

  • There’s no one more of a Spur than Sean Elliott
  • He’s got a great personality and demeanor
  • He genuinely loves and cares about the team and the franchise
  • He’s extremely knowledgeable of the game
  • He already knows the team personnel and their strengths and weaknesses (he’s the color analyst)
  • He’ll come in with a plan on exactly what to do
  • He’s committed to the grind, he currently travels with the team for most games
  • He feels like he’s in his 40s but he’s 55 so he’s right at that prime coaching age but he’s got that spryness about him
  • He’ll make sure to get the ball to Victor.

Sean Elliott.

Think about it and he makes kind of a lot of sense.

Think about it more and he makes even more sense.

Sean Elliott for next Spurs head coach.
