PSA: No, Wemby Wasn’t “Posterized” (Most of the Time)

Tonight I got to listen to Stacy King deliriously fawn over Coby White “posterizing” Victor Wembanyama for 45 seconds.

My thought: “Do you have a 4 IQ?”

Victor clearly made a last second stab at the block and only arrived at the rim as Coby White was already dunking the ball.

If there was any semblance of poster, it was only because Victor jumped into the picture when he had no chance of getting the block.

And it wasn’t just King. Coby White had the reaction of a guy who played the lottery his whole life and finally had his big ticket come through.

Last year we saw the same thing with Ja Morant. Morant crossed over Wemby and then dunked as Wemby was lunging back in the picture.

Morant also celebrated as if the non-poster were a lifetime achievement award.

Has Victor been dunked over before?

Yes.

It’s usually a result of a solidly built player ramming into him, knocking him off balance, and then dunking before he has a chance to regain his balance.

I can recall Mo Wagner and I believe Alpie Sengun semi-got him in this fashion.

I also remembered about the Kai Jones dunk in the preseason, but when I went back and watched the clip, Jones caught a lob and threw it in, but his hand wasn’t really even close to the rim.

And then there’s the Trayce Jackson-Davis dunk, but Jackson-Davis clearly committed an offensive foul and held off Wemby’s arm from blocking him.

I’m sure there are few other genuine dunk-overs, but my point is it’s far less than people think.

Every time Victor is in the vicinity of a dunk, people act like it’s time to storm the court And-1 Mix Tape style, but most of the dunks aren’t “posters.”

I never saw the replay, but a decent dunk may have come courtesy of Michael Porter Jr. from just a few days ago.

The Coby White dunk wasn’t though which made the Stacy King hype come off as desperate.
