Spurs 2024–2025 Season Preview and Betting Predictions

--

It’s finally time for season 2 of the Victor Wembanyama experience and, based on the offseason moves, I’m thinking this season Gregg Popovich has given up tanking. If true, this means the Spurs will rack up a bunch of wins.

Let’s start out with the Spurs over/under win total at 35.5 per BetMGM.com. I’m taking the over all day.

With betting, one of the elements to look for is artificial interference and last year the Spurs and Wemby were subject to a lot of Pop meddling to temper down the wins. This dragged the Spurs win total down to 22, but the team was/is obviously much, much better than this.

Assuming the reigns are unleashed, with Victor absolutely amped to start winning and the addition of Chris Paul, the Spurs could very possibly be a playoff team.

I’m going to slate them in at 45 wins this year. And at 45 wins, they make the playoffs so I’m also taking the Spurs at +325 to make the playoffs.

Victor Wembanyama

He’s going to light the league on fire. A year of experience, someone actually trying to pass him the ball, a summer of practice and development, and a coach who isn’t actively tanking will do wonders for his fantasy prowess.

I already know Victor worked his ass off this summer. He’s coming in this year to take over.

I’ll take the over on all Victor offensive stats.

Covers.com has him at -115 to go over 25.5 points per game. Sold.

His over/under on blocks is 4.5 and that’s actually too high for me. Opponents saw what happened last year and they don’t want to end up on Victor’s block highlight reel so I can’t see him getting to 4.5.

Also, I saw Victor being ranked outside of the top 10 NBA players multiple times. There’s no way. Victor is easily a top 5 player and those rankings will end up aging horribly.

Chris Paul

Chris Paul has proven to be a plus basketball player at multiple stops and the Spurs going from a point guard circus to the savviest player in the league is going to be a windfall.

I don’t care how old Chris Paul is, he’s going to orchestrate numerous easy buckets for Victor and there will be a synergy in the fact that Victor will open up space for Paul.

Even though Chris Paul has been an agitator his entire career and I dislike some of his antics, there’s a strong chance he makes the most difference of any free agent signing. His experience, knowledge, and play-making ability is going to make a huge impact and you can supersize that impact when you stack Victor’s everything.

Stephon Castle

Another reason for optimism is Stephon Castle. His preseason play indicates he is a real player — a rookie of the year candidate — and will immediately contribute with 3s, slashing, defense, and play making.

Castle has very nice upside.

Keldon Johnson

Another positive is Keldon Johnson obviously took the offseason seriously and came in looking lean and energetic. Keldon Johnson is extremely talented and if he comes in with a refreshed outlook, he could be a nightmare for opponents.

A lean and even more athletic Keldon means yet another decent defender for the Spurs and an influx of scoring off the bench.

Jeremy Sochan

Sochan looked lively and athletic in the preseason. He likely can’t be worse than how he started out last season and if he fulfills his destiny to become an NBA Swiss army knife, this gives the Spurs yet another defender as well as a forward who can score the ball when the opportunity presents itself.

Sochan had his fair share of lowlights last season (some not his fault because Pop played him at point guard), but with his diversified skill set, this guy has real potential to be a unique star in this league.

Devin Vassell

Devin is out to start the regular season, but the reports are that he likely won’t miss too much time.

Vassell is an underrated second star and I think he’s also going to flourish playing with Chris Paul.

You really can’t put a price on switching from tanking and Tre Jones at best for point guard to Chris Paul at the helm.

The Rest

Much to my chagrin, Blake Wesley is back. At least he now appears like he can dribble with his left hand, but I’m hoping he’s left out of the mix with Tre Jones and Chris Paul absorbing all of the point guard minutes.

I’m also disappointed to see Dominic Barlow gone. Barlow is a smart, rock solid center.

One slice of good news is Charles Bassey is back. Even though we didn’t see much of Bassey before he got injured, I think he’ll pair nicely next to Victor.

Another huge plus is Sandro Mamukelashvili is back. The guy is super sharp and a plus player all around. Pop loves Collins, but hopefully Mamu can steal his minutes.

Additionally, Zach Collins can’t be much worse than he was last season so even though I expect nothing of Collins, he might actually be a nice surprise. For example, what if he actually hits meaningful threes?

Harrison Barnes looked slow in the preseason and missed Victor for a lob so my enthusiasm for Barnes has lessened, but there’s an easy path to him being a key role player.

Last, Julian Champagnie was yet another player who was playing well in the preseason. He might have renewed focus that translates into him being another key contributor.

Surprise

Pending Pop doesn’t tank again— and I don’t think he will — the Spurs are going to have a field day and shock a lot of pundits and oddsmakers by emerging much sooner than expected.

The West is loaded with talent, but the Spurs are the dark horse that’s going to knock someone out of the playoffs and take their spot.
