Wemby Watch: ‘He’s Not a Happy Camper Right Now’

--

Story of the Game

I didn’t watch this atrocity of a Spurs lineup go up against the now #2 seed in the West, but I did go to YouTube to catch Gregg Popovich’s quote on sitting Victor Wembanyama after Victor had specifically said he wanted to play the rest of the season.

Here’s Victor’s quote:

“I made a commitment to this team. I have a responsibility towards the organization and the team and the fans. So there’s no reason to sit out.”

Annnnddddd Pop sat him just 3 games later.

Starting at the 2 minute mark, Pop talks about sitting Wemby.

“He’s not a campy right now, with me.”

If you keep making someone an unhappy camper, eventually they’re going to leave camp.

Pop’s already kicked dirt on Wemby’s new shoes multiple times this year.

Let us not forget that making the playoffs was Victor’s objective. To which Pop responded by tanking hard.

And then there were the minutes restrictions, forced sit-outs, and overly cautious “doctor’s orders” that led to each.

Is there a reasonable argument for sitting Wemby now?

Of course.

But in Victor’s words, that’s not his “mentality.”

Victor is different in many ways.

This difference may lead to him exiting San Antonio for a team that will let him do what he was born to do.

Play basketball.
