Wemby Watch: Spurs Turnovers Lead to Jazz Win in Delta Center
Story of the Game
The Delta Center is back. I had no idea, but it was great to hear a real part of the Utah Jazz history come back to life. There’s just a ring to the Delta Center.
Vivint Arena was a fine standard arena name, but the Delta Center holds some type of lore.
Anyways, the Jazz tried Victor early on and he had a lot of blocked shots because of it. After various Utah players discovered that they really weren’t going to score, they rerouted for the majority of the game and so Victor didn’t get double digit blocks.
Wemby ended with 5 which feels at least one light.
The first few minutes of this game were competitive, but the Jazz pushed out ahead thanks to an incredible amount of repeated, easily preventable turnovers by the Spurs. Once the Jazz took the lead, they were never really threatened again.
I believe the closest the Spurs were was down by nine.
Victor Stats
22 points, 2assists, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks in 27 minutes
9–17 fgs, 1–3 3 fgs
Quick Thoughts
This was a fairly bland loss as far as Spurs losses go. The Spurs didn’t get blown out of the water but they were also never in the game after the Jazz took control in the first quarter.
Victor played decent and had a few solid post up moves. He also shot less threes.
What really hurt the Spurs was the never-ending turnovers. At some point, somebody needed to take control.
Tre Jones had a particularly bad stretch where he didn’t grab a loose ball that went out of bounds and then he also had the ball tapped away from behind by a defender. This shouldn’t happen to a true point guard.
Zach Collins put up 17 and 8 in 21 minutes, but he still played horrible basketball. Not only is he playing bad but you can see it’s affecting him in his body language.
However, Sandro Mamukelashvili’s effort and intelligence off the bench was a nice sight to see. “Mamu” played well and deserved his 14 minutes of playing time. What was particularly impressive was his defense on Lauri Markkanen.
