Wemby Watch: Victor Dominant in Win vs. Shorthanded Blazers
Story of the Game
Nice win. Very nice game from Victor. Very good integration into the offense.
But. But. This was against a very shorthanded Blazers team missing DeAndre Ayton, Shaedon Sharpe, and Anfernee Simons.
This game represents a Lego block in the middle of a room where another Lego block got attached onto it.
There are no prizes for winning this contest, but it was nice to see the Spurs resemble a competitive, more cohesive team.
Victor Stats
30 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, 7 blocks in 24 minutes
9–14 fgs, 2–4 3 fgs
Quick Thoughts
The Spurs haven’t had an easy game in maybe all season, but they finally got one and they cashed.
The Spurs heavily involved Victor in the offense and he paid instant dividends. What was particularly interesting was Victor making a point to involve his teammates and create looks for them.
I think Victor wanted his teammates to know that they will get the ball (in advantageous situations), when the offense runs through him.
Even with a heavy pass mentality, Victor still put up alien stats of 30 points and 7 blocks in 24 minutes.
Despite the coast-style victory, there were a few things I disliked:
- Victor completely not boxing out on multiple occasions
- The Spurs relaxing once they accumulated a large lead (this team should never feel comfortable with a lead)
- A few missed passes to Victor, maybe they were a result of tunnel vision, but still, points were lost
Also, I feel like Victor had more than 7 blocks. Can we get an NBA official review on this?
The Spurs had to take a turn in the right direction at some point and they did exactly what they were supposed to in this game.
The maximum Victor prescription from Dr. Pop made everyone feel better in just 24 minutes.
Victor’s out for tomorrow’s game, but hopefully the Spurs start stacking more Legos on top of this game.
Oh yes, the Scoot-Victor rivalry may no longer be a plot.
Victor blocked at least two of Scoot’s shots and Scoot had a nice up and under layup on Victor but we didn’t see much friction between the rookies.
Scoot did tally 25 points in 36 minutes but he was 8–23 from the field.
