Wemby Watch: Victor Semi Strategically Out at Dallas, Spurs (and NBA Fans) Lose
I didn’t even realize Victor Wembanyama was sitting until I turned on the game and didn’t see an alien. I then went straight to ESPN.com/nba and got my answer in the side column news story.
I was instantly out.
I didn’t even know the Spurs also sat Devin Vassell.
Either way, if the Spurs sit their two best players, there’s no chance in hell they beat a real team.
And you know what, I actually don’t mind it.
They were very likely going to lose to Dallas anyway and Victor did look genuinely shaken up after the collision with Anthony Davis so why not give him a strategic night off.
And if the ace of spades is out, you may as well give Vassell a chance to recharge as well. He should be back in the starting lineup very soon so this was as good a rest game as any.
It all worked out quite nicely.
I’m anti-minute shaving and anti-sit games, but you can math out tonight’s game on paper and see the overwhelming logic. When you contrast this with what Philadelphia is doing, the Spurs were way more justified in their load/injury management.
Here are the cards stacking in favor of the Spurs’ decision:
- Victor genuinely banged up in Lakers game last night
- Spurs already significant underdogs in Dallas
- If Victor’s out, there’s no sense in playing Devin
The math works.
That said, I’m not dropping 2.5 hours on watching the starless Spurs steadily slip quietly into the night.
Something tells me others may have opted out as well.
